The first note has been played, the first step taken, and the Spartan Marching Band is officially back in action for another thrilling season. As we reflect on our exhilarating performance at the opening football game against Central Michigan, we are reminded that while we have one show under our belts, we still have more work to do. The month of September brings with it the monumental task of mastering not one, not two, but four halftime shows in just four short weeks.
September is not for the faint of heart in the Spartan Marching Band. With our challenging schedule, it’s a month that separates the devoted from the rest. Learning four halftime shows in such a condensed time frame is an immense task that demands dedication, precision, and relentless effort. At times, this seems like a daunting feat, but our commitment to excellence drives us forward. We are musicians and athletes, all wrapped into one. We rehearse tirelessly, fine-tuning every note and step to perfection. The discipline and dedication we bring to each practice are a testament to our passion for performing and our unwavering commitment to Michigan State University.
September for the SMB is not just about learning music and drill; it’s about embracing resilience. We face physical and mental exhaustion head-on, and we adapt to unforeseen challenges. In these moments we discover our true strength and character, and it’s a lesson that extends far beyond the football field.
When asking senior drum major Samantha Barringer her thoughts on our challenging month she shared, “September is especially difficult for the SMB members because we only have home games this entire month. The pacing of rehearsal is faster - sometimes we learn more than one show at a time, or at least have them overlap. But the band has done a great job keeping steady!”
As we stand at the crossroads of September, we look ahead to the remaining three shows with determination and excitement. We know that the road ahead is demanding, but it’s one we willingly tread. With each passing practice, we inch closer to perfection, and we can’t wait to share our artistry and dedication with our fellow Spartans and fans.
