DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

DEI

The Spartan Marching Band is an ensemble within the College of Music at Michigan State University. Participation in this educational opportunity is available to all Michigan State University students who successfully complete the audition process. The selection of members and the administration of the band are reflective of the University’s long-standing commitment to the principles of diversity, inclusion, and belonging. In conjunction with the College of Music, the Spartan Marching Band is committed to heightening awareness of social and cultural issues that affect our learning environment.

Diversity

Our organization strives to diversify our community, noting the psychological, physical, and social differences that exist in our society; these differences include but are not limited to age, ethnicity, gender identity, nationality, race, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and political perspective.

Equity

Our organization believes in equity for all members, promoting fair and equal treatment, access, and opportunity for advancement for each individual within the ensemble community.

Inclusion

Our organization is committed to creating a learning environment that embraces the concepts of inclusion and belonging. We believe that all members of the Spartan Marching Band community should feel welcomed, supported, respected, and valued as their full authentic selves.

We acknowledge that creating and maintaining initiatives that promote an inclusive culture is an endeavor that requires involvement from all, as we must consider the different perspectives and needs of our membership. As we work to explore new and creative ways of enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion for our students, faculty, staff, and fans of Spartan Marching Band, we are excited for the future and the continued growth of our ensemble community.
